Just on a browse of the papers came across an article that gave me food for thought (despite the source): http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... happy.html Even though my generation has everything matierialistically. I believe this shows the degradation in emotional support and socialisation in favor of an atomisation of childrens social activities (by Only playing indoors) and the fact that often children aren't t given enough of the right kind of atention. What annoys me about this daily mail coverage is they are largely to blame for children not going out and interacting with others since they created an image of a britain where there is a paedophile behind every bush, a rapist down every alley, a kidnapper in every car and a murderer in every tree. In my mums side of the family there are a lot of daily mail readers and beside their typical immigrant hating, bicycle bashing and politician busting ignorance theres also this massive propesity for them to be scared of living thier lives because of what may be "lurking" in the shadows often justified by " oooh you don't know what could happen to ya out there." To which I retort: the majority of murders and violent crimes occur from families and friends, as opposed to strangers. To which they scoff: "ooh it'll never happen to you, will it." As to which I reply: "I am not going to stop living my life just because theres a 1 in 700,000 million chance that I may be killed by a stranger, unaggravated on the street this night. even though theres 4 times the risk of me being killed in my own home by a relative or friend" To which They exclaim in a dismissive tone "ooh you do have an answer for everything" Which I have come to understand as meaning "Ok you're really right and I have no justification for emparting my own knee jerk reactionary beliefs on you, but as such a character I can not amdit mistake or fault so I have brush it off with a peice of rhetoric that will make you seem in the wrong with no logical proof" |

In my yoof I was told to get out of the house and come back when I was hungry or when it got dark. When I was older and ventured further afield my parents wanted to know who I was with, where I was and when I would be back. |

I feel your pain eddie, it's difficult to turn people away from disproportionate fear. Most people who worry about the improbable will most likely shorten their lives worrying about everything for no real reason. |

As Doug Stanhope said on Newswipe last week some of it has to do with people wanting to feel significant, as he pointed out, statistically nothing significant will happen to the majority of people. I believe that's why awful programmes like X-Factory et al are so popular they trick people into thinking they have a chance at becoming someone or something without having to put any effort in. It's the reason things like iphones and ugg boots and 4x4s are popular, it allows people to think they are something other than cubicle dwelling/shelf stacking/burger frying/phone answering monkeys. It's no surprise children are unhappy. Their parents are deeply unhappy but they don't know why, it's because they are sheep/slaves spending everyday doing a job they hate, unaware the house, the car, the huge TV does not belong to them, it's all leased, yet they want more. |
