http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/index.c ... d=3211325& There's an iPad vid in the link... I have to say, I've found the amount of options available to be slightly confusing... |

Yeah, the $130 difference is very surprising - although $7 is a little on the low side, considering the extra aerials, differently designed motherboard etc. But I would still expect it to come in at under $50 difference. As to the 16GB limit... Does it really need more? I have a 32GB iPhone and, to be honest, although I have all my music on it, I only use it for podcasts, so a 2GB memory limit would probably be fine for me, 4GB for a little headroom for apps and data. |

It's not too bad. You choose the size, 16, 32 or 64GB. Then you decide if you want 3G. |

On the one side, we have a guy who runs a PC repair shop in Michigan and spouts off a lot on the inertnet. On the other side, we have one of the most successful (and frankly mad) executives in the history of commerce who took a company that was a basket case and turned it around, then took it into one of the most competitive markets there is and ate the major player's lunches. I know whose opinion I'd actually put money on, should I wish to gamble any. Personally I think the wifi only iPads will be the big sellers. But more because most people won't actually need 3G in these devices, rather than the cost differential being insurmountable. Jon |

But as the article said, the price of the 3G option is very high, considering how expensive the chip is to produce. Look at how much you pay for a 3G dongle... ![]() |

Given the recurring cost of the data bundle they're selling seemed quite cheap - or at least that was the impression I got from the reaction in the room, I have no idea how much mobile broadband costs in the states - could they be using the upfront cost of the 3G hardware to subsidise the monthly cost of the data transfer? if that is the case you'd have to assume that, as data transfer bundles tend to be cheaper in the EU, the cost differential might drop. Or they might just keep the extra as profit... Jon |

Everything is good value if you want it bad enough ^_^ Some people may need the 3g capabilities. A vast amount of people won't. |

I would imagine the 3G model will be sold bundled on data contracts making the device cheaper than the suggested retail price. A bit like the difference between buying an iPhone on PAYG (expensive) and one on contract (subsidised). |

I dunno, a tenner a month gets me 250MB on my current phone, with 19.99 giving me a flat rate (up to 5GB at UMTS speeds, after that it is capped at GPRS speed), so the prices announced didn't sound anything special... |

In the US, that was the big difference, it won't be bundled. You can buy a data contract with AT&T, but you can also plug in any normal SIM card (CDMA cards excluded). |

Good marketing, it makes the other version look comparatively cheap. |

The price they've announced is for The USA, where, if Jobs's claim is to be believed, a decent 3G data contract is $60. So it is a fairly special price in their market. It may very well be there isn't the same scope for making hyperbolic comments in the more progressive european market but I'd at least assume the data plan will be cheap and straightforward. It's not in Apple's interests to allow the mobile service companies to faff around with it too much. Jon |
