Quote:
The Financial Times Deutschland reported that the data was being offered by an IT specialist who once worked at HSBC in Geneva.

He is said to be asking $3.5m (£2.1m) for the list of names.

....

Some leading members of Mrs Merkel's centre-right coalition argue it is wrong to deal in stolen goods. Others say it would be scandalous not to crack down on tax evaders.

Is there nothing under international law that would enable this guy to be prosecuted for trying to profit from this? Or is it just figured to be more sensible and quicker to try and get the money back? :?

For the German government, it will be remarkably cost effective. For a few million they will get much more than that in taxes. Add in penalties and fines plus putting them on the tax collectors radar for future taxes. For Switzerland the prospect of losing millions of customers and the billions of funds that they have illegally hidden in Switzerland may damage the countries finances far more.

Yep, I think the radio said they were expecting to make over 280m€ out of the deal.

Even the opposition is putting pressure on the government to accept the deal.

I would too. The whole idea of the wealthy hiding their wealth to effectively pass the tax burden to the average person in these current circumstances simply quite abhorrent.

isn't the hiding of this money to avoid tax illegal so getting the information maybe dubious but i believe the end justifies the means

they who scream its illegal are the very same who breech the law to avoid taxes …

I agree, though the issue may be that will they be able to prosecute because of the means of obtaining the data? There are a enough tax cheats here. I would say it is no better than being a benefit cheat, you are stealing from the government.

It has already been tested, they did something similar a couple of years ago (with the Lichtenstein data?).

It seems to be working, in Berlin, 36 people have so far turned themselves in and voluntarily made declarations for unpaid taxes!

Although HSBC had to pay one person 7.5M€ for not informing a customer that his details had been stolen! The money covers the fines he had to pay, because, had HSBC informed him of the leak, he could have turned himself in and avoided the fines...

I think that the whole process is excellent. I only hope that our government start chasing our tax cheats especially if they make political donations.

You mean Lord Ashcroft? That only works if the government isn't also the opposition, if you get me ;)

Well he is one, but there are many others who would qualify as tax exiles who make political donations.
