I am sure that we all have knowledge of such ineptitude. I certainly have! :x

sounds like most large companies. Play the game, look lke your good at your job, make people believe your good and then the small fact of wether your any good at all becomes moot and a long career awaits you! Or am I just being cynical.

Hasn't Whitehall been a byword for just that? Anyone recall "The Men From The Ministry"?

Yes it is on BBC7, I listen to BBC 7 a lot and so have come across this series quite a few times.

Bob while I would like to say you are cynical, I fear that you are absolutely spot on. They are all sitting out till they get their gold plated pensions, which will be considerably more than a private sector worker will get, plus our taxes will rise substantially to cover them.

I wouldn't surprise me at all if 2/3 of all people who don't work for themselves thought their boss was an idiot.

If you're not good enough to survive as a manager in the private sector, move to the public sector.
That's theh way it seems to work.

they're not managers, they're greedy investment bankers.
If some of these public managers moved to a private company, it wouldn't take long for them to be kicked out.

So the bankers didn't have managers?

I think the civil service is generally poorly managed now. Too much time chasing targets and filling boxes on forms. Governments are partially responsible but the senior civil service are primarily to blame. Problem is that they all get bonuses for turning up. That needs to be scrapped.

I'm not sure about your comment regarding poor management within the civil service. Ok I can only comment ( in terms of central government ) on two departments.

One had without doubt some of the best managers in it I have ever seen but they were hampered by the ever, radically, changing whims of politicians.

The other were improving but with plenty of scope  again hampered by massive changes in direction every other day.

Take the politicians out of the loop and things would improve dramatically IMHO.

Unfortunatly thats not going to happen. Politicians need to be seen to be doing something. it doesnt matter what or the impact, they just need that soundbite, that manipulation of the facts to show how wonderful they have done etc
