Having done jury service twice now, I have found that the judges do explain things as simply as possible. One of them did a printout for us about Duress and how it relates to the case. Plus jurors can always ask the judge questions through the clerk if they don't understand something.
None of the juries I sat on had any problems with directions but the cases were not that big or complex
