Perhaps he hasn't heard of the "quiet" carriage - coach A. I'm in two minds about this TBH - on the one hand yes it will save a bit of money, butI know people in the private sector who get sent via First Class when they need to travel, and what actually happens is they go Standard Class and pocket the difference. So TBH I don't really see a reason why MPs can't go First Class (since it's no better than what happens in the private sector anyway), provided they don't then travel Standard Class and pocket the difference. |

MPs are issued with travel warrants, I understand. My opinion is this should continue, but be for standard class travel only. If someone wants the quiet and space of a first class carriage, they can pay the difference and maybe claim it as an expense later. |

Standard Class travellers are upset at having to share their space with a troughing MP |

I don't see why MPs should be able to purchase an upgrade to 1st class and claim it back as expenses. If you let them do that, they all will every time and you might as well issue them with first class warrants anyway. What you should do is give them all standard class travel and let them upgrade to first class at their own expense. That's what most commercial businesses would do. The business is paying you to get from A to B, there's no reason for them to pay for luxuries along the way. If MPs find standard class to be unacceptable, do they really expect any sympathy from the people who have to use it every day and pay for it themselves? Jon |

With second home allowances the bar stewards shouldn't need to travel that much anyway. ![]() Yeah they'll have functions and engagements but distancing themselves from the people they represent should be an expense they cover. |

But then you'll get MPs who don't go to Westminster very often to represent their constituent's views in Parliament. ![]() |

Not sure I agree with that fully. Yes, if he has a travel warrant, let him use it for standard class travel. If he wants to upgrade it to first class, then that comes out of his pocket, not the public’s. |

MPs do appear to get angry at the silliest of things and very rarely at the most serious of times. I think if they had a less comfortable lifestyle then they'd be able to properly prioritise their emotional outbursts. Mark |

No, you're all correct. That was my first thought, too, but I was swayed by discussing it with Best Beloved. |

I think MP's ought to be paid the national average wage ............... There ought to be a council house ( type property ) made available for them to use when in London and they have their own house in their constituency. A standard class weekly travel pass to get them from London home again. Seems reasonable to me. ![]() |
