Stream of consciousness ahoy! ;)

Quote:
Ex-DICE boss Fredrik Liliegrin has labeled Nintendo Wii a "virus" - and said that the platform holder knows it is "not a video games machine".

Liliegrin now runs a company called Antic Entertainment, which produces 'casual games for the hardcore'.

He told GamingUnion: "Wii, to me, I would describe it as a virus, that doesn't stick. Everyone comes home, it's a toy, people have got to realise the Wii is a toy, not an entertainment-focused product.

"People come home, someone, they play Wii for a bit, feel it's really cool, blah blah blah, they go out and buy one. Ask people how often they play the Wii, that are not the core game consumer that buys one because they have an Xbox 360 and a Wii or a PlayStation 3 and a Wii.

"The people that only own the Wii, ask that consumer how often they use their machine. They just don't use it, it was cool, but they're not gamers, so they put it away.

"Other than the Wii Fit phenomenon that helped a lot of people get a nice cutie voice telling that they're fat and need to go work out, they need to find other alternatives. Nintendo is smart in that way in that they realize this is not a video game machine, this is not a games game machine."

He's right from what I've seen...

What a load of cobblers.

Granted, our Wii isn't used every day, or every week for that matter, but when we do switch it on the whole family plays. We all have fun, if that isn't entertaining I don't know what is. For that reason it permanently sits under the telly, rather than being boxed up and put in a cupboard.

I have no problem calling it a toy, because you can loosely describe all consoles as toys, but it is a socially focussed toy.

It's admittedly hard to tell ;) , but I think the main thrust of his argument is that for so many the Wii winds up just sitting there after the initial rush of owning a new console, and that that isn't sustainable for the developers/publishers who need games sales.

Wouldn't call it a toy as such, but I think it's definitely become a 'novelty' that's lost it's appeal for many. The Wii apparently even struggles to sell the licenced crap (big movie tie-ins for example) that's plagued other consoles for decades. Hell, it struggles to appeal outside it's core franchises from what I've seen :? , though they do sell a load of games to women :|

I would regard it as a low spec console. It has a niche market and for that it does well. It may not appeal to the hard core gamers.

I'd love to know what Nintendo are planning as a follow-up. In a way the motion controls have maybe painted them into a bit of a corner - I honestly think they'll need something of a return to traditional games and controllers if even their current customer base is to be maintained :?

I think this man has the right idea in the long run:
