Europeans are not getting as wide a choice of browser as they may think, claims a web designer.

From 1 March, European users of Microsoft's Internet Explorer began seeing pop-up screens asking them if they wanted to try a different browser.

The choice was offered to settle an anti-trust case the European Commission brought against Microsoft.

But some say almost half the browsers on offer are clones of IE that only give people an illusion of choice.

They were always going to be on a hiding to nothing on the list of options. :D

More so if they are clones of IE. If there was a single version of IE available and the other browsers it would probably be as good as it gets.

The EU has the illusion that people give a [LIFTED].

The problem is, once you get past IE, Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Opera, you are down to customised versions of IE or Firefox (the likes of Maxthon or Flock)...

Perhaps the ballot should be about picking a rendering engine.

Would you like Trident, Gecko, Webkit or Presto?

I'm fairly sure the average user doesn't give a monkey's about the rendering engine. They'll choose browsers based on things such as UI-layout, familiarity, ...

I bet the average user doesn't realise they're using a "web browser" and are instead using "Firefox" or "Internet Explorer". I can't see how this silly ballot has helped anything. Users who want a specific browser tend to know they exist and will have them anyway. Users who don't and use what they're given won't want a choice. Sure, some people may end up with browsers they wouldn't have used, and sure they'll be fewer IE users, but at the end of the day has the ballot improved the user's experience?

The ballot was a bad idea, I know several average users who were panicked by the message...

Most users are traumatised when they hit "maximise" for the first time... :?

Agreed.

Most will either go for Internet Explorer, because they recognise the logo, or they will chose the "prettiest" logo, sorry, icon.

I deselected that update from downloading. I've already got the browser I want. But I am expecting a phone call from my dad to say "his computer is broken" any time soon.

Maybe they should have a simple first page which is normal or advanced users. Advanced users get the customised browser options. The normal user will get only IE, Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Opera as an option.
