No! No! And thrice No!

Is it just me or is the slide into a 1984 police state accelerating at and increasingly alarming speed.

Yes. My concern is if you are not a criminal and not on the fingerprint data base how on earth do they then identify you? DNA? Or is your finger print added to the police database?

Although less than 1/6 the population have fingerprints on record, I guess that for those who would be checked because of suspcion the number would a lot different.

However. No, no, no!

Are there any political parties planning to increase our freedoms in the next election?

I'd much rather that than a bloody ID card.

Far less likely to be arrested for not carrying your fingers than not carrying a card. Less likely to be arrested = greater liberty.

It is also much cheaper. Plus if you do not do anything to get stopped in the first place that is good. But if the police look at this as a way to start added data to the fingerprint database then public opinion could turn against it.

If a policeman tries to take my DNA or fingerprints without a good reason then he's going to have a bloody good fight on his hands.

I would probably refuse and force them to arrest me. I would then probably proceed with a wrongful arrest complaint and sue them. I am not the sort of person who does naughty things so really should not be harassed in such a way.

You haven't needed to be naughty to be harassed in this country in a long time. This is [LIFTED]. And they wonder why nobody trusts them.

Overall I have no issues PROVIDED that some controls are set in law

- Copies are not retained / added to the fingerprint database
- They must have reasonable cause to ask
- The Chief constable of a force is sacked if its overused

I think there's more chance to policemen gaining the power of levitation than those restrictions coming into force.

+1 but who honestly thinks that its over use will lead to the sacking of the Chief Constable?

A better solution is a £1000 deducted permanently from the budget of any police force for each case that shows it was not reasonable to ask for it.
