10. Toyota Prius has a solar roof
Despite their woes with the sticking accelerator, Toyota is still a powerhouse of technological advances. On the Prius, a solar roof can power the interior air vents and keep your car cool for you when parked in the hot sun. The only downside: the car makes a strange whirring sound while venting itself.

Well, we all make noises when venting ourselves

More weight less fuel economy. I remember the good old days when cars were torn open like a tin can during an accident, and half the weight they are today.

:P

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

The Audi A6 had a solar roof panel as an option about a decade ago, to keep the AC running on a hot day, so the car was cool when you got back...

Good to see it coming down in price, although shouldn't it recharge the battery?

It should do if the fans are not being used but in reality I wonder.

6. Volkswagen Jetta TDI sips fuel
Most of the technology in the Volkswagen Jetta TDI is under the hood, not inside the passenger compartment. This vehicle uses a unique clean diesel engine for the best fuel economy on the road (about 44 mpg)

This is good fuel economy for a diesel?
We have a Rav 4 diesel with a fuel economy thing on the dashboard, averaged 45mpg over about 16000 miles so far. Not an aerodynamic vehicle, not a small engine and I'm not particularly light footed.

I thought that too.
My average is 47 and that's from a 7 year old car.

My Megane was similar for a 2001 car which had the same size engine, there are better ones available too, the Ford TDCi and the honda diesels are pretty good now, as are some of the smaller VW ones.

My car has an engine in the front that makes the wheels at the back turn.
The ones at the front make it go left or right.
What else do you need?

I've already had the discussion with someone at work about buying a new Prius and it's environmental impact compared to driving a 21 year old car. :D

One thing we forgot, this is an American website, so it could be that they are talking about the smaller American Gallon, not the Imperial...

My 1991 Passat 2L petrol also averaged around 50mpg (over 120K miles)...

@Prof, getting rid of a perfectly good car to buy a Pious is wrong. If you are getting a new car anyway, then why not? Although the new Citroen sports electric looks damned sexy! (Saw it on a review of the Genf Motor Salon yesterday.)

If you're of a certain creed, you'll be wanting to factor in the energy requirements of constructing your Pious. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKTOyiKLARk
