The Bank bonus culture has set a bad example. You'd think after bankers take home millions in bonuses every year, a £250 train ticket would be a drop in the ocean.

The real issue is why does it cost £250 to travel from Cardiff to London? Oh, that may be because the rail companies are profit-whores put in place by the tories.

Who's franchises have been kept by Nu Labour, even when they have had plenty of chances to stop it with minimal cost.. conclusion they all don't care about the "common" man/woman etc. They just pretend they do.. especially in an election year.

No great shock there then.

I do use the rail network a few times a year. I still think that they should be in state hands. A cheaper rail fare may be a subsidy to those that commute by rail, but if the alternative was that they drove it is a better way of doing things.

The government want people to use "public transport" instead of their own cars so ;lets get "public transport" to be just that and to provide a service at a sensible price so that people want and can use it.

I totally agree but until the government give up on privatisation's this is never going to happen. They should create them as non state owned organisations so that they cannot demand crazy wages knowing that they were government backed.

I haven't been on a train in about a decade so I don't see why MPs should be allowed to travel first class

While they might have some valid reasons for working while travelling that does not necessarily mean that they will actually do so. If they want to work in first class they should be pay for it themselves, it is not as if they are poorly paid. It might make them aware of the cost of rail travel if they actually did have to pay for it themselves.

already been said by somebody else but the idea of free standard train travel to get them between constituency and London is fine and they pay ( non claimable ) the upgrade if they want it works for me.

Trouble is, if it was in state hands, the train staff would be "public sector workers" and everyone seems to want those to live on the streets, lose their pensions and their jobs.

I am not against public sector workers. Most are very good and diligent. I do have issues with their managers however. I have dealt with many lower level front staff and they generally do a good job, (except the job centre - I went for my brother who was paralysed as a result of a spinal operation. They did not have a clue)
