There have been artificial sugar shortages in America for a year or so.

They tried to replace it with corn syrup and now they are looking at a couple of artificial sweeteners, including a rebranded Aspathame...

It's actually true though. There's a famous study of the effects on the indigenous people of Northern Canada (who previously had had no exposure to sugar products at all) when trade began to bring them together back in the day. The behaviour they exhibited was very similar to that of alcohol addiction.

And, equally, if it is an addicting product then the demand is increasingly inelastic and raising taxation on it will have no benefit to the population, but a sizeable benefit to the coffers of government.
