This really should be accounted for in the councils and Department of Transport's contingency budgets. No need for a snow tax.

I wonder what that pile of cash the Government asks for every year so I can use my car is for then.

If only they had gritted the roads then so many potholes could have been avoided.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

+1.

It used to be called Road Tax, but given the Govt. then started using the tax to fund things elsewhere, they changed it to "Vehicle Excise Duty" or some other crap. IMO "road tax" should be used to fund road repairs, improvements, safety etc. Ditto with speed cameras - the fines should be used to pay for things like better road signs, better road layouts etc. Fuel taxes should be used to invest in public transport so as to improve the infrastructure. These taxes should not be spent on other things.

Exactly. I do not have a car but I do not feel that motorists should pay any more. The same applies for council tax holders.

Car tax, fuel duty, tax on the fuel duty, speed cashmachines (sorry cameras), congestion charging.

How much more money do they think they can squeeze out of the motorists?

I wouldn't mind if they actually used it to improve the roads instead of creaming it off for other stupid plans - ID card anyone?

Snow tax??? We pay enough f-ing tax for the roads as it is.
We pay the car tax
We pay huge sums of fuel duty
We pay VAT on the fuel
We pay VAT on the fuel duty tax (even though it has no value)
If we drive into certain cities, on certain roads or use certain bridges we have to pay a toll tax.

We pay enough tax to pay for the roads several times over!

I'm not sure that's actually true. The tarmac was broken up to due the ingress of water which then froze. That water would be there regardless of whether the road has been salted or not. What would have stopped it is if the roads had been properly maintained in the first place, then there wouldn't be cracks for the water to get in to and therefore no later freezing damage creating the potholes.

All of which amount to a fraction of the money the government gave to the banks to pull them out of a pothole of their own making.
