This should not be happening. What secrets have been lost. If the machines were properly protected we all suspect that the foreign governments have the capability to crack them if they got hold of them. It may be enough to stop the casual cracker but then the laptop s end up on eBay and who knows where?

So long as decent encryption was used then there should be very little chance of someone cracking it

Yes but governments have a lot more processing power than the average person can lay their hands on.

That's nothing - our council put old puters to a reboot company without wiping the drives. This company 'promises' to wipe the drives before passing them on.

Yea, right :?

Most companies offering that service will provide certification to prove it has been done ( what was used ) , what has been done ( process followed ) etc. Prices are generally very reasonable. :D you can normally also get a % of the resale value back to you. ;)

FFS!

  1. Why is top-secret information leaving GCHQ in the first place?
  2. Why are laptops going in and out of GCHQ in the first place?
  3. Why aren't those laptops being tracked constantly by satellite?
  4. Why is top-secret information being allowed onto laptops?
  5. Why is top-secret information being allowed onto any device that can be moved and attached to an unsecured network?

Well maybe a solution is to tag any spy who wants to take a laptop out of the building. "Now Mr Bond, here is your MI5 required ankle tag, required because you have signed out a government laptop."

If the staff need to be on call why not provide them with sleeping accommodation on site so that they are available.
