I know nothing about it, but they seem to be talking about re-branding the UK channel SyFy in line with the US, if that makes any difference :?

It's because Yanks had issues saying scifi and siphi is easier ;)

It is because they couldn't trademark the generic term SciFi, so they had to chose another name.

As they chose the medical abbreviation for syphilis, the Americans derided SciFi Channel for months, a couple of years back, but they didn't relent. It also coincided with SciFi Channels decision to no longer be a science fiction channel and they started showing more reality TV than Sci Fi content... :(
