I know nothing about it, but they seem to be talking about re-branding the UK channel SyFy in line with the US, if that makes any difference

It is because they couldn't trademark the generic term SciFi, so they had to chose another name. As they chose the medical abbreviation for syphilis, the Americans derided SciFi Channel for months, a couple of years back, but they didn't relent. It also coincided with SciFi Channels decision to no longer be a science fiction channel and they started showing more reality TV than Sci Fi content...
