How silly is that

What if someone sends me a e-mail etc with details of a good restaurant etc and want to copy it into my contacts
Absolutely bonkers if you ask me

Did you even read the article?

Double clicking on a phone number, email address etc. in the email will offer to add it to your contacts... If the smart linking works, you don't need copy and paste in those situations - the same as you don't need them in Outlook on a Windows PC, right click on an email address in Outlook and it gives options, like adding it to your contacts, creating a meeting with the person etc. as well as copying the address.

For more general text, especially in mobile Office, I can see it being a seriously missing feature.

Don't expect anyone to just realise that though. Copy and paste is standard, people will usually try and go down that route because it's one of the most basic things people learn how to do.

I'm not keen on them removing standard copy + paste, I can understand why though because of the potential memory implications (data being still on the clipboard takes up RAM which could be used elsewhere)

HOWEVER

It's unlikely these features will be completely missing aside from in name, the smart linking can be applied in a lot of other situations judging by how it can be used in the article

The limitation seems obvious - the smart linking will only work with pieces of data for which the system has 'handlers' - i.e. it can recognise and discern the function of. If it's possible to install third party handlers then the system will work well. if it's not, it's probably going to be a pain in the rear. Smart linking actually strikes me as very similar to data detectors that showed up in a previous version of a competitors desktop OS...

That will be essential for some users. ;)

It'll probably be added in a £150 service pack, as seems to be the way with MS these days.
