According to Opera, the increase represents a doubling from normal download numbers on average – and the impact in some countries has been larger still.

Poland (328%) Spain (215%) and Italy (202%) top the list of increases, with the UK's 85 per cent actually one of the smaller changes.

Now, obviously not everybody trying out Opera will stick with it, but those figures still have to be a joke, right?

While the Norway-based company has focused on the European market, according to StatCounter GlobalStats in March 2010 Opera was the biggest browser in Russia with a market share of 32.76%, beating Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and Safari.

I thought this was interesting as we haven't finished March 2010 yet  or have I missed something :? :D

Yes but Opera had an update the same day so existing users would be included in that total download figure. That said the figure was considerably larger than usual for Opera.

They're asking us to get excited about a huge percentage rise over a trivial base?
I'm sure I saw a Dilbert strip with a similar punch line recently.

So that makes about 7 users now right?

I used to use Opera, lack of support for banking sites was one of the major flaws to why I stopped using it

Too many bank sites are badly written. They only accept certain browsers. They should appreciate that not every one wants IE.

Perhaps they will take notice from this point on. Although a bit short sighted.

TBH I always have a couple of browsers as sometimes a site is so badly written it will not support my browser of choice.

My dad moved from IE to Firefox a while back. When I asked why he said because a mate at work told him its much better.

A plasterer came to my brothers house to do... well.... plastering, and upon seeing him use his PC exclaimed he ought to use Linux because its better. He asked why and he said "it just is and can do everything you want". It cant. He's a gamer.

Now I'm not sticking up for MS (I dont use IE and would have a Mac given the choice) but dont you find some people hear from another person how great something else is and simply pass that on based on no knowledge, experience or technical basis? Normally because its either something different or "not Microsoft".
