Dozens have been arrested in Bolton during clashes between English Defence League and Unite Against Fascism protesters.

Police are battling to control thousands of demonstrators taking part in a protest today organised by the controversial right-wing group.

The EDL, an organisation which opposes "radical Muslims" and Sharia law, organised the rally in Victoria Square, Bolton.

A counter-demonstration by around 2,000 UAF supporters, who oppose the EDL, has led to 31 UAF members arrested and three from the far right wing group.

Police had expected trouble and the two factions were separated by barriers near the Town Hall, which has been boarded up as a precaution.

Several smoke bombs were let off by the protesters and two members of the public were taken for treatment to minor injuries after being caught up in the melee, police said.

Assistant Chief Constable Shewan said: "The number of arrests already made is a clear indication that this is not a peaceful protest and some demonstrators are determined to cause trouble.

"The actions of some demonstrators is resulting in injuries to others - this is not acceptable."

Mr Shewan had issued a stern warning to the protesters before the rally.

He said: "I must make it abundantly clear that anyone who is coming with the sole intention of intimidating communities or inciting violence and racism, as has sadly been the case in previous demonstrations, that we will take action against you."

Many shops and pubs are closed in the area, and most taxi firms stopped their drivers working.

The EDL describes itself as a peaceful, non-political group campaigning against "militant Islam".

But ugly scenes marked one of their protests in Manchester last year, with 44 arrests and 10 injuries.

Bolton Council leaders met with Home Secretary Alan Johnson earlier this week to ask him to ban the demo, but he told them he has no power to stop a protest unless it is on private property.

The arrests seem disproportionate in terms of group numbers, so I hope the police haven't given UAF something more to shout about...

Johnson may not be able to ban such protests, but I believe he could trot out 'public order' :?

What'll happen is more and more honest to goodness scumbags will join both groups, with the police needing agents inside, if they haven't got any there already.

The thing is... the local council have been setting this up to be a riot for ages. They tried pretty much everything legal to stop the EDL march and when they found they couldn't - so inconvenient that freedom to protest isn't it - they started using all sorts of underhand tactics to enflame the situation. They wrote to every family with school age children in the borough to tell parents that they shouldn't allow their children into the town centre today 'in case there was trouble'. They forced a lot of the town centre shopkeepers to shut up shop for the day 'in case there was trouble'. They put up huge metal barriers around the town hall 'in case there was trouble'. They asked the local muslim institute to lodge a protest about the EDL being a racist organisation so they could get the march stopped - the Institute told them to sod off as they had no interest in being a political pawn and had spotted that the last thing a muslim organisation would want is to be seen to be trying to get the march banned.

Basically, the local council has done everything they could to try to ensure a riot happened short of handing out bandanas and petrol bombs on street corners. And if there had been a riot, you could be damn sure the council were going to blame it on the EDL, regardless of who was actually involved.

And then they have the marches and there are, what, 50 arrests out of 5,000 protesters (assuming both sides projected numbers turned out to be roughly accurate). I'd pretty much guarantee there are more than 50 arrests every Saturday night in Bolton town centre, which these days is a no-go zone to anyone with half an ounce of sense, a situation the council does absolutely nothing about.

I don't support the EDL - frankly I think they're a bunch of misguided idiots - but the way Bolton council has acted in this is much much more worrying for democracy than anything the EDL has done so far. The EDL may be a bunch of fascists but there was only one group actually acting like fascists over this, and it wasn't them. The town centre is dying on its arse - 50% of the retail space must be seconds or 'pound' shops - the refuse collection is completely disorganised, the roads and pavements are shot, yet stopping the EDL has been the only item of council business for about the last 2 months.

Frankly, it stinks.
