How did he know who it was? I though the people watching the scans were supposed to be in a different room for privacy reasons.

From those blurry images on that BBC news report, I think you'd struggle to recognise anyone.
Either that or these scanners are a lot more accurate than they want people to think.

TBH I expect they've obscured that photo on purpose to protect the man's identity.
