From the Grauniad's Tech. Twitter feed:

BREAKING: News International starts paywall for Times and Sunday Times (UK) from June. £1 per day, £2 per week. Will you pay?

£1 a day? Can't you buy a real paper copy for less than that?

There's always free news online, I'd just go there instead.

The paper is £1 too (Monday-Friday). Personally I prefer the Guardian's online effort anyway, which is still free...

I don’t bother with their online presence now, so quite why I’d be interested when money will become necessary is beyond me.

I read The Times online. But if they were to charge, I'd just stick with the BBC News website. TBH most newspapers are a load of crap and there are days when a newspaper doesn't need to be more than four pages.

I expect they'll come to regret this, mostly because the initial process of signing up just won't be appealing in the slightest. And especially not for folks these days

I really hope they try to charge for The Sun and NOTW soon just to see how it goes

They are planning it for all of Murdoch's papers. I think that it will be a failure. Certain papers like the Wall Street Journal and Financial Times could get away with it as could Racing Post but they have niche markets and as such no competition. The others could find it much harder. Ad rates will certainly fall once subscriber numbers are known. Advertisers pay to get on screens. If they are behind a pay wall they are not seen.

I agree with every word.

However, it seems that Murdoch knows better. Either that or Times are so desperate that even stupid ideas are worth a shot.

Well with a pay site the advertiser may get a better class of viewer so they could get a better ad rate for the paper, though whether the two combined will make up for the loss of millions of readers.

True, advertisers will know that anyone looking at there adverts are:-
A. gullible
B. Stupid
and consequently
C. more likely to buy the crap we are advertising.
