PlayStation owners won't have the option to install Linux on their machines following the newest PS3 firmware upgrade which is due to arrive this week.

The update comes on April 1st but apparently this is no April Fool's day gag as its being reported on the PlayStation Europe blog.

Sony has cited the rather vague sounding "security concerns", as the main cause why the alternative OS option is being removed, though that unlikely to appease PS3 owners who have been running Linux on their machine for a while.

Of course the install is not mandatory, so you can keep your OS if you want, that is of course unless you don't want to access PSN or play games online.

Seems a bit of a weird decision to us and it's really going to piss off all those scientists who've hooked up multiple PS3s to form supercomputers. No more lunchtime sessions of Uncharted 2 for them.

That's all kinds of retarded, and typical Sony from what I can tell... Oh, and I know it's an unfortunate timing issue, but releasing an update on April 1st is just asking for trouble

Perhaps that is the work around for the hack...that whats his name made (the iphone hacker), he said it was 95% software and 5% hardware.

Dear Sony,

Where's my refund?

Yours,

A consumer who's left with a machine which can do less than it could at launch.

I suspect a few people around the globe will be upset and asking for refunds. It'd be like buying a Dell to run Linux on and finding that a year down the line Dell upgraded the firmware forcing you to use Windows...

Eugh!

 :P

What sort of percentage of consumers run linux on their PS3?
I'll hazard a guess it's well under 10%.
What's the advantage of running it on a PS3?

I believe the hardware is very good for the price of the console, so people doing scientific computation (including Folding@Home) like them.

The PS3 native f@h client is much better than running a client on linux on a PS3 (if that makes sense).

You could still make a cheap PS3 render farm though.

You can almost bet money on the fact it's their easy fix to stop the console being hacked.
If you do run linux on it as part of a farm then you probably wouldn't do the update anyway as you wouldn't be gaming etc
