http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/who-does- ... serve.html Oh noz killz the internetz! Don't use Google Docs to create documents, use GNU Emacs! ![]() The guy is a complete tool. His original ideals were fine, but his rants have become increasingly delusional and exercises in FUD. He doesn't do himself any favours by calling things like Windows and OS X spyware, either. Whilst there are genuine concerns about SaaS, he seems to forget that most users and small business don't know anything about computers, let alone want to go through the hassles of setting up their own servers and editing their own code, to make sure it is safe. Yes, the users could use, say, OpenOffice, instead of Google Docs, but if they need the group editing features, they don't have a choice - well, they could probably use MS Office + Sharepoint, but RMS would probably have a case of apoplexy at the thought! ![]() A lot of people don't care about SaaS being "spyware", just as long as it is secure and convenient and allows them to do their jobs effectively. To be honest, he does make a couple of good points in the article, but they are so bound up in hatred for Microosft and Apple and hidden behind rhetoric, that most people will probably miss them. If he wrote the article rationally, he might actually have had something interesting to say... ![]() |

Well that has convinced me to stop using Flickr's photo editing facilities. I'll email them for the source code. Does he not live in the real world? Can someone shed a light on what back door MS has to "forcibly change any software"? |

Hmmm.... He does make a number of good points - I agree with a lot of it. However, he manages to shroud it all in a hippy-tastic rant. I'm an avowed socialist myself but to lay into companies like he does simply clouds the issue.
Which is sad, because he's correct. It's not what you say, it's the way that you say it. |

Well, sadly, open source software is proprietary as most people can’t control it either. If you want to get into engineering, then you may have a chance, but for the rest of us, open source is no different to any other kind of software: closed, unalterable and with poor support. |
