Sony has said it will disable a feature on its PlayStation 3 (PS3) console in a move some consider to be a pre-emptive strike to guard against games piracy.
The firm said that an update to be released on 1 April will prevent people using a function that allows them to install alternative operating systems.

Steve Jobs once said that it was much harder to take a feature away than it was to add it. I have forgotten the context, but I think it was when he was asked why a feature was not precedent in a product (note - wayyy before iPhones and iPads). I think he was being careful not to release a product with a poor feature which they would have to pull later on.

The move comes after a US hacker released the first code that he claimed bypassed the PS3's security systems.

The exploit, released by hacker Geohot, used a machine running a variant of the Linux operating system.

Wonderful, another blow to the Linux world. Anyone who doesn't really know much might stumble on this and think that Linux is for crackers and other bad people...

Hasn't some US agency just built a PS3 farm using a third party OS?

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.
