Fiber Optical Transmission In Demand Of Higher Capacity

http://www.physorg.com/news189430420.html

Quote:
With the increasing high volume content over the internet, such as multimedia and high definition images, new transmission methods need to be found to handle the increasing data demand. Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp (NTT) have successfully demonstrated an ultra-high capacity optical transmission of 69.1 terabits per second over a single 240 km long optical fiber.

Just think of the porn that you could download! ;)

It'll never arrive here, not in our lifetimes. Thanks to privatisation, we're at the mercy of shareholders who won't like the expense.

It will only come here after everyone else in Europe has it and the government are embarrassed enough to give BT billions to get us to 4 Mbits. Though with the Digital Economy Bill being rushed through why would we need even that?

You don't.

However, the "backbone" needs to cater for millions of users. 69Tb / 20 million households is less than 4Megs each. The interconnects between high populations need to be much faster than even this.

We still need more...
