Post subject:  Microsoft lied in E3 Natal video, says Heavy Rain boss

Quote:
Heavy Rain director David Cage has claimed that Microsoft 'lied a bit' in its presentation video to show off Project Natal at E3 last year.

Speaking to Destructoid, Quantic Dream boss Cage said he couldn't believe that one particular scene - in which a boy showed his skateboard to the screen before scooting off on it in the virtual world - could be achieved in reality.

However, Cage said he was looking forward to the peripheral's release.

"I've seen Natal, and I'm really curious to see what they're going to do with it," he said. "I was a bit frustrated that they presented it with a sci-fi type presentation [at E3]."

Destructoid reports Cage rolled his eyes when he commented: "When the kid comes in with the skateboard and the laser ray, scanning the skateboard, and then it's in the game... We are in the industry, we know what's feasible and what's not."

He added: "I thought it was a little bit lying to present it that way, because it will let [consumers] think that they will something that they are not really close to getting."

Microsoft is set to reveal Natal in all its glory at E3 in June.

Doesn't sound like much to get upset about, but you don't want it gaining traction and the entire internet shouting 'Boo!' before release... Especially as M$ are suggesting Natal will have more uses than just games.

The skateboard one manages to get the design his hand is covering too...

Even I think that one is far fetched ;)

Err - not if the skateboard has an RFID chip or a barcode, or a registered design that the system only needs to see a percentage of to recognise. The kid has bought his board, and the manufacturer has a deal with a game maker, and their designs are in the game. Kid shows Natal the board, the system recognises the design, grabs it from a server and puts it on the model in the game.

That is even more far fetched, the only way it would get it is from a recognised design, and image recognition is a pretty weak area of machine learning at the best of times :)

Dunno what came of this, but the idea is there and out in the wild. We also have face recognition in cameras and software, which again is looking for certain pre-programmed patterns. Even if image recognition isn’t used, there are a number of other ways to get a device to recognise an item which could be employed for a game tie-in. All good fun, and wonderfully exploitable. If that kid has a certain kind of skateboard, he’d be able to unlock more of the game.
