Nintendo's US boss Reggie Fils-Aime has been critical of Apple's iPad, arguing that the games available for the new gadget are lightweight.

iPad launched in the US over the weekend but Fils-Aime doesn't believe it will offer serious competition as a gaming platform. "[Apple] is not having an impact on Nintendo when you look at our business, our volume, our hardware, our software," he told Kotaku.

Fils-Aime also criticised the games available on the iPad, saying "I've seen data that suggests that while consumers are constantly downloading Apps, they play with them for a few times and then they are moving on to the next thing.

"If our games represent a range between snacks of entertainment and full meals depending on the type of game, (Apple's) aren't even a mouthful, in terms of the gaming experience you get."

I like Reggie - he never lets the overall picture bother him

I think he has just described his own business model. Nintendo rely on sales of games to make a profit.

Not entirely. They have a different business model. Sony & MS do that - essentially the profits from games sales subsidise the losses made on console sales - but Nintendo have a rule that every single thing they sell must at least break even on it's own. The Wii made a per unit profit from day one, whereas the PS3 was rumoured to cost $300 more to make than it cost to buy when it initially went on sale.
