Sony's commitment to 3D gaming seems to be growing all the time - and the company has now revealed that it expects the tech to be "gaming's biggest revolution" of the modern age.

Talking to MCV's weekly industry magazine, senior development manager, Simon Benson, said: "The fact that we have a team dedicated to stereoscopic 3D gaming shows that we are taking this very seriously."

"We believe that stereoscopic 3D is possibly going to be the biggest revolution in gaming for many years to come."

Sony clearly has big ideas for the technology, with Benson hinting that its 3D content could have the same impact for games that Avatar had for films.

"If you think that the movie Avatar revolutionised cinema just wait to see what 3D games will do," he said. "We aim to lead the way wherever we can."

At the moment all we have is retro red and green cellophane 3D as seen in Batman: Arkham Asylum Game of the Year Edition.

At least that works on a normal TV. Read our impressions of that here.

I think they're gonna be disappointed in terms of sales, if I had to guess at the outcome... And I could see some people getting very dizzy if it's coupled with Move

So 3D has got about five years to find a standard before the next generation of consoles come out. If there's no standard by then 3D gaming just won't happen for the masses.

I don't know how consoles work, but for computers we've had the various 3D standards for many many years.

Any OpenGL 3D game renders in 3D space and can be displayed in 3D. That goes all the way back to Doom over a decade ago! I've had 3D goggles for about 7 years, although I've only ever used them a couple of times. There's no reason why other hardware shouldn't support the existing standards.
