Some pub landlords say they are being squeezed out of business by the high rents and inflated beer prices demanded by pub companies.

The pub companies have become highly indebted property management companies. All because of speculation in property. They need high rents to repay these debts. This plus they can rip off their customers through higher prices. The government need to break these deals. So that publicans can buy from who ever or the breweries directly.

I did some summer work for Grand Met many years ago. They would take over a healthy pub and within a few years squeeze them into bankruptcy.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Beer prices are high but the margins that the big chains demand on soft drinks is beyond belief.

When I ran a pub in 1997 a pint of cola cost £1.50. Its cost including syrup and gas was a whopping 7p.

Did you allow for the cost of the tap water? ;)
