They need high rents to repay these debts. This plus they can rip off their customers through higher prices. The government need to break these deals. So that publicans can buy from who ever or the breweries directly.

I did some summer work for Grand Met many years ago. They would take over a healthy pub and within a few years squeeze them into bankruptcy.

Beer prices are high but the margins that the big chains demand on soft drinks is beyond belief.

When I ran a pub in 1997 a pint of cola cost £1.50. Its cost including syrup and gas was a whopping 7p. _________________Finally joined Flickr
