Not only are they going on trial, accused of stealing our money, we are paying for them to defend themselves.

Why shouldn't they?

Everyone's been saying that it cannot be one law for us and one law for them, same applies here even if it's in their favour not ours.

Also, please bear in mind that it's innocent until proven guilty in this country.

Yes I agree in principle but they must clearly be over the income threshold unless they are claiming that they are unemployed or soon will be? ;)

Out of interest, what is the threshold?

An effective legal defence can cost billions - a luxury way beyond the means of anyone but the most powerful of super-villains.

With criminal cases they may not have a limit but they could be hit for costs at a later date. While they may have a right to a trial the moment a jury find out that they are MPs will they get a fair trial?

Trial without jury, there has been precedent.

Well they are technically unemployed at the moment.

Seriously though, seems unfair when so many are denied legal aid. Used to be able to get some legal advice via the CAB - green form, or somesuch.

So how come we never see the [LIFTED] down the job centres?

Three ex-Labour MPs will probably have to pay back the legal aid they are receiving to fight charges over their expenses, Gordon Brown has said.

Gordon Brown has no say in the matter - it's up to the trial judge to decide whether or not they have to pay the fees.

Yes but the ones facing trial were the most egregious ones. Claiming for mortgage interest even though the mortgage had been cleared is pretty excessive.

Not really if those guys ever want access to anything in parliament ever again for their future lobbying careers the labour party could very successfully block that. I'd have thought that threat would suffice to bring about a return of the legal aid money.
