A tribunal is considering how much the MoD must pay a female soldier after she won her case against the Army for sexual and racial discrimination.

I'm sorry but I don't get this. A soldier ( gender irrelevant ) is late for a parade and is therefore disciplined. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

The fact that the soldier is

a) Female
b) Black

seems to make a difference. Why ? :?

I don't think the race and gender had much to do with it.

The soldier in question is a single parent. The disciplinary - quite rightly, mind - was over failing to attend parade. The underlying problem is, as a mother, she hadn't been able to arrange suitable child care.

So, the questions that need to be asked are should the military services be required to provide childcare for single parents, and should they also be looking at whether single parents should be allowed to sign up?

Is any employer required to provide 24x7 childcare facilities?

Good question but that would then be discriminatory.

So, the military are caught in a cleft stick. On one hand they must observe the laws of the land, on the other those same laws can be used to beat them.

*shrug*

I agree but she is trying to get compensation for racial and sexual discrimination.

I can see how it might be sexual discrimination, but racial?

She's black. The judge seems to think she had a case.

So if you were late and got disciplined would you sue?

LOL, I turn up an hour late for work and get disciplined.

I'd definitely sue because surely the only reason they disciplined me is because I'm white and male.

She also successfully argued that she was the victim of race discrimination after saying that immigration laws prevented her bringing a relative to the UK to help with childcare.

The tribunal heard that most British servicemen and women were able to turn to their families for help with childcare.

But Ms DeBique, a signals technician who worked on communications equipment, argued that she was disadvantaged because her family were based in St Vincent and unable to assist.

She had wanted her half-sister to move in as a live-in carer at her accommodation at Chelsea Barracks
