It was like it in the 1980’s too. We were paying out more money per month to people who were not working than we were earning. |

Something is very wrong here. I know many people who work for a living who don't have the luxuries that these parasites have. |

With the new tax credits system they should be better off working even if they only earn £15K pa. I have to say though, I wouldn't mind taking home over twice my net salary to stay at home and breed in front of a big TV. I'd really like to spend all my time creating and caring for a big family. Where do I sign up..? |

Well, it's time there was a government in place that would make sure he wasn't better off scrounging off the state. It drives me nuts to see people like him just give up working because they're 'better off on the dole' when there are those of us who desperately want work, but can't find it. Also, it makes me sick that him and his wife seem to be dropping brats in order to bump up their benefits. IMHO, child benefits should be paid for the first child only. If you want to have more kids, you should have to go out there and get a job. |

How much will the tax man take from the payment for this? They also have 7 kids and want another 7!!! I know the government has a population pyramid scheme to pay for previous generations but this really takes the piss. Benefit familes up to the required amount for population stability if necessary and the rest should pay for themselves. |

I think that maybe a benefit cap at three kids might be appropriate otherwise they will just keep having more kids because it pays them to have more. And he wants seven more kids? |

As for their standard of living, it might sound excessive but 3 expensive games consoles are not that expensive, plus sky TV at £50 is their choice, I spend nearly as much as that on my broadband and phone. As for the 42" TV it could be a crap brand who knows? I am planning on getting a 32" LCD HD TV later in the year and it will be less than £300.
That is a lot to spend at Christmas. While I accept kids need gifts, you do not need to spend that much on gifts. I know a single mum with five kids and she has a cap on the total cost for child. The kids are well adjusted and do not feel hard done by. |

But how messed up is a benefits system thats gives you enough income to afford to run a merc people carrier and a top sky TV package. Luxuries should not be afforded to those who decide to not work. |

Yes. Although they still refuse to look at a voucher system. But something about this seems to be deliberately emphasised to p*ss people off. You can get a Mercedes Viano people carrier for £13,000 (who says it was bought new) and it does 33mpg (admittedly not earth-shattering). I'm not for one second supporting them but the scripting of the article was more to induce ire rather than to raise a point about the situation. I mean, students aren't exactly loaded but they go out of an evening and generally have games consoles too. [/slightly-off-topic-rant] |

Yes we do! I go out every other week and on special occasions (birthday's, etc.) and I have my SNES and a GameBoy Colour! The luxuries we live on  Yes, I realise that I'm typing on a £2,500 computer, but I earned that money!
