A learner driver taking her second lesson managed to flip her instructor's car on to its roof in Oxford.

The woman, in her mid-20s, hit a gatepost on Old Road in Headington, causing the Fiat 500 car owned by driving instruction firm BSM to flip.

Not a very interesting story - but what I want is - do you have any interesting learner driver stories?

The only one I have is hitting a curb at about 30 and losing both the front hub caps. My instructor then refused to go home until we'd found them from the field they had rolled into, wasn't an easy job in the pitch black, but I did eventually get home about an hour later.

My mum borrowed my dad's car for her test.

It was an old Rapier (not the Sunbeam), which had been rally prepared - four point harness, town & country tyres, full set of daylighters, blue printed engine, disc brakes (it originally came with all drums).

The only problem was the passenger seat, it was a flip seat, to allow people to get in the back. The lock at the back didn't work, but as the passenger was secured by a 4-point, it wasn't a problem.

The examiner got in the car and my mother asked him to fasten up. He refused. She asked him again, he told her he'd been driving for years and never used a seat belt.

They set off and she was doing everything right, double de-clutching etc. Then it came to the emergency stop. He said, when he hit the dashboard with his clipboard, she should stop as quickly as possible.

He raised the clipboard.

My mother caught it out of the corner of her eye and reacted instantly, stamping on the brakes.

The pads clamped onto the discs.

The tyres howled on the road.

The rear end rose up.

The driving examiner's head hit the windscreen, before his clipboard hit the dashboard.

She failed her test. :(

The instructor responded calmly, professionally and swiftly

"So, handbrake on. Remember to check your mirrors before exiting the vehicle. Unfortunately I'll have to fail you as you didn't manage to park without hitting the curb."

LOL

My instructor had a habit when driving through town of exclaiming "look at the tits on her". As I craned my head around he'd say "eyes on the road please".

It was all done in jest

To make the lessons more interesting, my instructor would value the obstacles on the street "Deathrace 2000" style ("2000 points for the baby in the pram!") !

I used to do that all the time.

I wa driving on a dual-carriage way with my instructor whilst learning, before noticing that the handbrake light was on. As I was fully concentrating on driving at the time (first time on such a road and all that), I simply assumed subconciously that the handbrake must be on, and so cranked the lever up. At 60. Around other cars. Quite how I kept it straight, put the handbrake off, and didn't break the car without swearing I'll never know.

BSM == Bring (a) Spare Motor

Or as my driving instructor used to call them "Bring us some money"

OK, did you notice anything you did wrong just then?

Try that one again but this time the wheels should be pointing downwards.

When I said "reverse park" I meant backwards not upside down!
