Oh dear. More chaos being caused to flights and this time it has nothing to do with British Airways strikes. Times Online article Mark |

Volcanic ash is nasty stuff. It's like very fine carborundum powder, and will kill a jet engine in seconds. NATS are being cautious, and effectively stopped all flights in the UK. While the ash cloud is currently at very high altitude, they need to know where it's headed and if it'll come down to lower levels. Meanwhile, it's nice to see the Beeb has concentrated on the poor people who live near the volcano and had to be evacuated from their homes. Oh, wait. They did mention it briefly yesterday, but of course disgruntled air passengers at Gatwick or Glasgow are much more important. At least they have homes to go back to. |

It is not so nice if breathed in. It is like breathing glass and shreds the airways.
I always think of a news report of a train crash in India, where thousands were killed and no British are involved. Must not miss that important bit out. ![]() |

Discovered this with a text from the Wench this morning, who's supposed to be flying back from Zambia today into Heathrow. I can understand the caution, but's also quite frustrating. |

Nice to know that the Beeb aren't narcissistic and pointed out that the Nordic countries are already affected and worse affected than the UK... ![]() |

Like the post above, the Guardian website has a graphic that lets you see the progressive spread of the cloud of ash. Mark |
