Sony has released an updated version of the PS3 Slim onto the market that is less prone to the infamous 'Yellow Light Of Death'.

The new model features an improved version of the standard RSX graphics chip. As well as making the system less liable to die and overheat, it uses 15 per cent less power.

The new chip is also reportedly less expensive to manufacture, and has shaved some weight off the console - which now weighs 200 grammes less than the previous Slim model.

PlayStation University reports that the hardware update features a 40nm version of the RSX chip, rather than the less efficient 65nm version originally released.

The new model also uses two 128MB XDR RAM chips instead of the four 64MB chips found in the original PS3 Slim - and houses a new cooling assembly and a lighter power supply.

The new model is called the CECH-2100A by its manufacturers - but has not been officially announced by Sony.

PU rumours that the cheaper 40nm chip means the console is more likely to be profitable for Sony on hardware sales alone.

Pants. Mind you I've not had a problem with my slim (* crosses fingers *) but I hate it when things get updated so quickly. :D

I've had my Slim since Xmas and I still thought that

The only times I've had problems with it was because of iPlayer and the usual Sony attempts at bricking it with an update
