The grandmother called a bigot by Gordon Brown says she has thrown away her postal vote because she was so insulted by the Prime Minister's remarks.

Lifelong Labour supporter Gillian Duffy has told the Mail on Sunday she will not back any party in Thursday's General Election.

The 66-year-old was thrust into the media spotlight when she encountered Mr Brown on the campaign trail and quizzed him on policies including immigration.

After their conversation, the Prime Minister forgot to remove his TV microphone as he was driven away in his Jaguar.

He was recorded criticising aides for allowing Mrs Duffy to speak to him and referred to her as a "bigoted woman".

Mr Brown later spent more than 40 minutes at the pensioner's Rochdale home trying to make amends.

Exiting Mrs Duffy's house alone, the PM told waiting reporters he was a "penitent sinner".

"He wanted me to go outside with him shake hands in front of all the cameras but I didn't want that fuss," Mrs Duffy told the paper, "It was too soon."

She went on: "The Labour party is just a big machine with spin doctors doing everything to try to get him back in."

Mrs Duffy said it was not Mr Brown's "bigot" remark that hurt her most but being called "that woman".

"It's no way to talk of someone that is it?" she asked.

"As if I'm to be brushed away. Why couldn't he have said, 'that lady?'," she said.

She said the Prime Minister has invited her to Downing Street but doubts he will be in office long enough to honour the offer.

"He asked, 'Do you ever come down to London? If you ever come down you must come to No10 and meet me and Sarah.'

Gordon Brown

Gillian Duffy refused to face the cameras on her doorstep

"He wanted me to go outside with him shake hands in front of all the cameras but I didn't want that fuss," Mrs Duffy told the paper, "It was too soon."

Pensioner Upset After PM's Gaffe

"Well, I just looked at him. I didn't like to say it, but all I could think was 'I don't think you'll be there'."

Mr Brown's wife Sarah has said her husband will "forever regret" what he said about Mrs Duffy.

"I wasn't with Gordon at the time but I could tell from the tone of his voice when he called me that he'd done something he felt mortified about," she wrote in the Sunday Mirror.

"If there's one thing everyone who knows him agrees on about Gordon, it's that he simply hates upsetting people.

"The idea that somebody would have been caused pain or embarrassment by something he had done is the sort of thing that goes right to the core of Gordon and I know that his apology came straight from his heart," she added.

That really made me laugh, especially her thinking he wouldn't be in power long enough for a quick chat

And how bad is 'Let's shake hands outside for the cameras', and getting your wife to make excuses for you (the same 'That's not the Gordon I know' she always does)

Well Labour have lost this election because they have abandoned their core voters. Immigration becomes a serious problem when it forces down workers wages and drives up the cost of housing. Until these are dealt with there will be problems in society.

I think there's possibly something in that. if you assume that the working class (such as they still exist) are Labour's 'core supporters', they are ones whose lifestyle is most vulnerable to being adversely affected by immigration. After all, if your profession is 'owning half of Berkshire', it's not as if some polish bloke can come in and do your job for half the price...

The question is; why is "some Polish bloke" willing to do work which "native English" people are not?

The immigrant workers have less favourable benefits, so an English person doing the same job would generally be much better off financially. Could it simply be that many English people are work shy selfish good for nothing lay abouts, whilst the kind of person that is willing to travel thousands of miles across different countries in order to earn a meagre wage is definitely a better kind of person?

Which would you rather employ: A hard working, determined and grateful "Polish bloke", or some whinging pom who's late all the time and does nothing but complain even when he's there?

If you own half of Berkshire you probably like having a reliable Pole to fix your castles plumbing. The middle classes have benefited as well for the same reasons, but the moment these Polish doctors stop building plumbing work, and start taking middle class jobs, which they are more than qualified to do but are possibly only held back by the language for now. Then once their language skills are adequate they will want better paid jobs and then the middle class will find that their attitudes to immigration will change.

For the Brits there is also the whole fact that the benefits system can actually work against people getting jobs. If you are part of a couple and you are both unemployed if one were to get a job offer, the impact on the family finances are so complex that you cannot determine if you are better off. A single East European does not have that problem.

I'm sorry but that is total rubbish.

You go to your JSA adviser and say "Will I be better off?" and they tell you. It's not hard, and the answer is nearly always "Yes - you will be better off if you work." It's the one thing Labour have done better than many previous governments. It's a long way from perfect, but so are most things.

Lucky Brown, she could easily have voted Tory/Lib Dem which would have made it twice as bad for him.

Who cares?

She's making £250,000 off the story so I imagine she doesn't care what happens.

Aye. Turned out a nicely profitable trip to the shops for a loaf of bread.

And here’s the rub - if you take this woman as an indicator of behaviour, how many other people have done the same? What effect has this blunder had on the voters? We probably will never know.
