Captain cock-up will fall on sword:

Quote:
Mr Brown said he might do charity or voluntary work, and that he didn't "want to do business or anything else - I just want to do something good".

I can only hope that he finds his true calling, because running a country just ain’t it.

I don't share your sentiment, but of course it's his job as leader to accept responsibility if (when) they do not win.

If Gordon does charity work, I'll be feckin' astounded if he isn't working some sort of angle - this is a man who made a deal with slime like Tony and Mandy

I have to admit when I saw the subject line the words 'whether he wants to or not' popped into my head.

Yes but do not forget that he now has a very handsome politicians pension which will be based on his income as PM.

Precisely, so he'll be working an angle ;)

This is also the man who claims to have 'written' quite a few books, God knows what his definition of charity work is...

To be fair, I don't think anyone would dispute that Gordon Brown is fearsomely intelligent, it's just he lacks some of the other useful political skills. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he wrote books (as in proper academic books on economics or politics, rather than ghost written large type autobiographies) or ended up with a couple of professorships at prestigious institutions. Plus he's still an MP, even if he steps down from being PM. So he's not short of things to do after the election.

Brown is witty and intelligent but he does have an intellectual blind-spot. He made a number of economic errors and was lucky that the banks lent out so much to keep the property bubbles going. It was more by luck than engineering that the economy grew steadily for the majority of the Labour period in power.
