No surprise there then.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

The US price is $699 for the 64Gb wifi iPad equates to roughly £476 yet they are charging £599 for the same version. VAT is £89.21 so the extra might be duty and extra margin because of currency. So not so bad.

I believe at some point in the past Jobs said it costs them roughly 7% more to do business in the EU than in the US - higher corporate taxes, higher average wages for staff etc. If true, that would make a chunk of the difference. I suspect they are making a small extra opportunist profit on the EU iPad but only a few extra dollars/euros per unit. Jon

Another way of looking at it is to see how the iPad is priced compared to, say, an entry-level MacBook Pro. In the U.S. the MBP is $1199, the 16Gb iPad $499, or a little under 42% of the price; the 32Gb is 50% of the MBP and the 64Gb a little over 58%. Prices here in the UK are £999 for the MBP, so applying the same logic suggests an 16Gb iPad price of £416; it would have been nice if that had translated to a ticket-friendly £399, but to be honest I wouldn't have been surprised if it was £449, so I can live with £429, £499 & £599. BTW Orange announced iPad 3G data tariffs today as well:- http://newsroom.orange.co.uk/2010/05/07 ... i-fi-3g-2/'Pay as you Go' at 5p/Mb for casual users (max cost £40 per month), 'iPad daily' gives you a 200Gb daily bundle for £2, 'iPad weekly" gives 1Gb for £7.50, otherwise it's a monthly bundle - 'iPad Monthly 15' (recurring) is 3Gb for £15, and 'iPad Monthly 25' (recurring) gets you 10Gb for £25; monthly deals also include access to WiFi hotspots. No news from O2 yet, but I'm sure they'll be along soon. Anyways, I'm in on Monday - just have to figure out whether to 3G or not... Cheers, Pete.

Corporate taxes have two sides, if they are higher then usually companies offset higher costs against those taxes with minimal effect on the final accounts. Higher average wages in the EU are a better excuse.

Also announced are the data traffic figures for the iPad. | | | | Quote: Yahoo! Says 10% Of Their Mobile iPad Traffic Is International Share
In a post on Yahoo’s Mobile Blog, the big purple Y! seems pretty gobsmacked that 10% of iPad traffic is coming from outside of the US, despite the fact that there has yet to be an international roll out of the tablet. These aren’t just Canadians dipping south of the border: in fact, Yahoo claims that the U.K, France, Germany, Taiwan and Hong Kong are responsible for the vast majority of international iPad traffic. At first, I thought that the vibrant international iPad resale market was more responsible for this trend than a handful of international travelers, but maybe not: according to Yahoo, the number of iPad users between the ages of 35 and 44 is thirty-six percent higher than the U.S. Yahoo average. For me, that looks like the age bracket you’d most likely expect business travelers to fall into. | | | | |

Uk Applestore off the air as of just after midnight. Dunno when it'll be back up and even I'm not mad enough to sit here all night clicking 'refresh' every so often. To bed!

UK Applestore taking pre-orders from 6.30 this morning - DAMHIKT..... Vodafone tariffs are monthly only, £10 for 250Mb and £25 for 5Gb, O2 offer 500Mb/day @£2, 1Gb/month @£10, or 3Gb/month for £15. So between those two and Orange, there should be something for everyone. O2 are on the ball as ever though - when you click on 'more details' regarding their 3G tariffs they take you to a blank page on their site... Pete

Will anyone be considering the 3G versions?

Yup; considered and ordered a 32Gb 3G. Deciding factor for me was the 5p/Mb tariff from Orange; I really like how my iPhone and laptop sync Contacts & Calendars, and for me, a slight increase in purchase price and running costs is worthwhile to keep an iPad in that loop.

I have decided to wait until they are in the Apple stores and then get my beady little hands on one to try out to see which version would suit me best. So far the 64Gb wifi version appeals most to me. Though I think I will get one later this year or early next year.
