3D or OLED? Which one is the future of TV?

I'd bet on the OLED if I had to, and even then I'm not that fussed... I could wind up with one eventually though, as my current 37" TV isn't gonna cut it when I eventually move out

For me it's OLED. Better image quality and lightweight screens is far more important to me than wearing 3D glasses or having to sit in an exact spot in my living room (non-glasses versions).

To be honest, neither, alone. 3 years and we will have 3D OLED TVs. That will be the future...for a while.

The only thing that I dislike about these TVs is the somewhat tinny sound quality, but I guess that's the price you have to pay for having a very thin screen.

Absolutely but if your paying that kind of money for a set there's no doubt you have a high quality sound system alongside it.

Bought a new TV last November, so won't be worrying about what "new" is for another 10 years or so...

I was looking at getting an LED back lit LCD in the next few months but if large scale OLED are coming I might be tempted to wait that little bit longer.

Have they resolved the longevity issues of OLED? I expect a TV to last 20 years or more, especially if it costs a fortune.

That might not be considered an issue by the companies but certainly is by the end buyers.

Very true, we still have a CRT

Served us well for getting on for 10 years. Looking at maybe picking up a new TV but all I'll be looking for is a 32" full HD with freeview HD that's good for PS3 gaming.

That'll keep us going for long enough I reckon without breaking the bank.

I am also looking at a 32" HD 1080p for less than £300. I would consider OLED if it was around the same price. I could cope if it were to last seven or eight years.

It's still a bit of an issue, the different colour emitters last different times. The blue tends to die off first, leaving you with a green & red only after a while. They're up to around 15,000 hours for blue, and nigh on 50,000 hours for green (IIRC the lifetime is measured until the brightness drops to 90% of the initial level). 15,000hrs would be good for 20 years with nearly 3hrs a day (I tend to watch 1 1/2 hrs or less).

The main problem is the failure rates in the manufacturing process are still ridiculous. Give them a few years to sort that out and the prices will drop to something less insane. At which point I will buy at least one :D

Thanks for that. I think my TV is usually on for less than 15 hours a week, mostly at the weekend. Provided you can adequately recalibrate the colour, I guess 15,000 hours would last me well.

Some people leave the TV on for 15 hours a day which might lead to unacceptable colour after just 2 or 3 years. My monitor is on for nearly that much

I do wonder how accurate the figures are though. It's difficult to simulate 20 years of viewing, and my experience of energy bulbs is that 10 years is nearer 10 months...

I might as well go ahead with my LCD HD this year then. 8-)

+1
I still have a CRT TV. I think I'll wait a few more years before I replace it.
