I can see both sides of the argument there. And I had no idea the Scouts were so popular :o

Why do they need special muslim groups? Why can't muslim boys go to normal scout groups? :?

+1

I'm just going to say what first came to mind, religion should be taken down the smoking ban route, not in public and should be labelled "is harmful to your health"

I was a beaver, then a cub, and then a scout. It was brilliant! :P

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Mostly because “normal” scout groups are Christian. I have yet to hear about atheist scout movements…

Actually they changed that years and years ago. The Scout's law changed from "To do my duty to God" to "To do my duty to my god". Strangely atheists still weren't welcome back then.

They didn't have Beavers in my time. I did cubs, scouts and ventures.

I was a cub, a scout and then an assistant instructor for a while. I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone.

I loved it for the rock climbing, pot holing, sailing, canoeing, orienteering, rafting, building rope-slides and other cool stuff, camping, shooting, archery and most important - FIRE!

When I joined, they made a note of my "religion". I said I didn't know so they were going to put CoE. I objected. I can't remember what they put in the end, but "atheist" would have been most appropriate at the time.

We used to swear allegiance to God and to the Queen. We said the Lord's Prayer at every meeting. We said "grace" before every meal. Christianity was pretty thickly engrained, presumably from LBP's original vision.

I have a great deal of love for the scout movement, but I would personally like to see all religious aspects removed. Others might disagree, arguing that religion is a part of what makes a well rounded, confident and caring young person. They are entitled to their opinion, but provided people respect other's beliefs I don't see that they need to be a part of Scouting.

Does anyone know if the Canadian and Australian scouts pledge allegiance to the Queen?

Wiki wrote:
Scouts Australia is open to young people from all religious faiths and from those with no religious affiliation. The wording in the Scout Promise of "do my best to do my duty to my God" allows flexibility and the movement is open to all who can make this promise. Historically, Scouting in Australia was rooted in Christianity as that was the dominant faith in the country in Scouting's early days, but recently, members have come from many faiths.

Sounds like it is adapting nicely.

Also they have joeys instead of beavers.

WTF!?!?! you were never a "scub"? a scub is a cub that has just joined the ranks of being a scout, I think the word scub is half scout half cub and rhymes with "nub" ironically :P I was never a beaver, just a scout for many years then venture scout  best days of my life tbh

Haha yes I was bratty!

I remember, there was a short "transition" between the two - where I would spend half the session with the younger group and then go and spend the second half with the older boys.

I can remember being one of two boys wearing the grey uniform, while everyone else was wearing their green one.

I felt strangely proud when we had our little ceremony and got given our green jumpers, and woggles.
