British Airways chief executive Willie Walsh has said blanket bans on flying were "a gross over-reaction to a very minor risk"
Let's see how much of an over-reaction it is when the first 'plane goes down.
The EyJaffaCakes volcano nearly stopped a trip for me, and as annoying as that would have been I would much rather have been safe than someone have to tell my family and friends that my 'plane crashed.

Dude, I agree. But what do we know? We're not multi-billionaires looking to gain more wealth...

There were rumblings that the volcano could be causing disruption for a long time to come - possibly even 20 years. This means that our addition to the jet engine needs to be broken, or the jet engine needs some serious redesigning to let it cope with lower altitude flying and to filter out particles.

Either way, it may be that we need to start looking at alternative methods of long distance travel.

Funny how they have those things <Fringe reference> "over there" </Fringe reference>

Paul's right. Our addictions to many things need to be broken and the natural forces of the universe are the only forces more powerful than those with money. Good luck to the bloody volcano.

I think that sailing and cruising is the better solution. Particularly for transatlantic passengers. Overall we need to return to slow travel especially with peak oil coming.

Are you having a bet with someone about how many times you can mention peak oil in a set period?

No but I just think that with peak oil production upon us it is better to prepare for such events. It is an issue irrespective of whether global warming is real. The Saudi oil figures are a fiction as are their claims of reserves. Efficiency in oil use is not going to harm us. Preparation will make us flexible to any possible changes.

I'm betting peak oil will soon become the new pie/Firefly. Can't be ignored folks...

Ships are horribly fuel-inefficient! We'll have to go back to sails!

Not that bad, but they do not have problems with ash clouds. Plus you can carry many more people than an aircraft.
