http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/apple-store-cash-ipad-3g-iphone,news-33499.html Think in the UK they have to accept cash. Shops can refuse to accept cards and can refuse to accept too much change – you can’t force them to accept a million 1penny pieces for your tax bill for example.

Yes, but the restrictions stop at £1 coins, so you can legally pay your £700 tax bill with 700 £1 coins. Of course the legal tender argument is never worth bothering with - if I had £1 for every time I've seen a "No £50 notes" sign....

Didn't something like this happen with the iPhone (haven't read the link)? Something about registering to hinder multiple unit purchases?

Erm, but don't you need a computer (Mac or PC) running iTunes to activate it? I don't think it will work out of the box without first linking it to an iTunes account, will it? I might be wrong, but I think you'd need a computer somewhere along the line. And who the hell walls around these days with $500 or more on their person? Just asking for trouble.

ipads were jailbroken an hour after release. I'm guessing they're trying to stop the black market.

No, they have an "on-device" activation also.

Quite a lot of people, we commonly take £1k+ sales in cash.

Yes but the iPhone was to be sold with a contract. The iPad does not.

Having said that, I don't know many people who don't have a computer that would have a Wifi internet connection to be able to use said activation.

I walked in to the O2 store & bought my generation 1 iphone no questions asked (although I had to pay by card), it wasn't until I activated it that I had to sign up for a contract.

This story is about America and their laws. Though I can understand its reasons to stop grey market exports. Though it is discriminatory against those that do not have or want a credit card.

They are helping you by not accepting your cash.
