Commuters choose games over reading … says games company

 | | | | Quote: A growing number of commuters are abandoning books and newspapers in favour of mobile games, according to research announced today. Okay, so the research has been carried out by Popcap, a social gaming publisher that has something of a vested interested in the market, but nevertheless, the figures are reasonably interesting.
Based on a survey of more than 1,500 adults, the company discovered that more than a quarter of Brits aged between 16-24 are playing mobile games rather than reading to pass the time on journeys. That's compared to just 11% a decade ago. There's no breakdown into specific gaming platforms as yet, but the figure takes in mobile phones, smartphones and handheld consoles.
I think we need to test this with some anecdotal evidence: on your commute to work this morning, how many people were playing games? I haven't noticed a drastic increase, but then I live in Somerset and tend to travel offpeak, so I'm hardly in the middle of commuter hell.
Meanwhile, will this be read as a damning indictment of modern culture? Is it bad that we're using downtime to play, rather than catch up with current affairs or take in a chapter or two of the latest Booker winner? We're seemingly hardwired to see the decline of print media as a tragedy for the collective intellect, but then, is playing Professor Layton any less valuable than doing the crossword? Will we get a richer narrative experience from Dissidia: Final Fantasy, or from the latest blockbuster crime thriller inexplicably hogging the bestseller list?
And while we're on the subject, have you ever initiatied a local multiplayer gaming sesh with a fellow passenger? This apparently happens all the time in Tokyo, where Monster Hunter has made beast-slaying pals out of complete strangers. Could that ever happen here? According to Popcap's research, only 7% of us are willing to chat to fellow commuters, so I guess it's highly unlikely.
Also, what are your top commuting games? | | | | |

If I remember to take a magazine with me then I'll read that. However, they're too bulky to carry around all the time so I do play games on the phone a lot. I have been ever since Snake on my first Nokia, and now it tends to be Sudoku or City Bloxx.
The only problem is they eat battery life. If I game for maybe an hour or two then I'm lucky if the phone lasts the rest of the day. The 6300 has a great standby time of over a week, but it's not so good if you actually use it. I don't know how other phones compare?
I've never played multi-player games on a train, but it seems like a good idea. I've never investigated options for my phone, but if you have a DS there's plenty of choice. It gets over the lack of signal if you create a local network, but I do wonder how many potential gamers you find on the average commuter run? I imagine most of them would be happier with Sudoku than Mario Kart.

Hmmm- well I do do the daily commute into London
Let see – I have a book, Phone and laptop and in the evening have the Standard
I tend to watch films on the main (40 min none stop part) of the commute (also having my new Bose Quiet 15 travel headphone make this really great) and then read / use the phone to play solitaire for the parts of the commute that have interruptions (walking ,changing trains etc)
Actually watching movies (mainly TV series – boxed sets etc) on the train has saved me a small fortune in buying books
I would say that more people of the train are playing / matching movies on the train than they used to – mainly because there are more devices that let you do it than there used to be.

I prefer to read when travelling. Usually something that means that I haver to stop and think. That way I do not get motion sick. Games are best when stationary.
