Post subject:  Mick Jagger: Legalise All Drugs

Quote:
Mick Jagger wants the government to experiment with drugs – by legalising them all.

The Rolling Stone superstar believes that this controversial plan should first be tested on the Isle Of Man, of all places.

Quoth Jagger: “The whole question of legalising drugs is fraught. You usually try these things out in very small places. You know, like you try a new product out in a small kind of society or an island somewhere.

“And in England they always try out new mobile phones on the Isle of Man. They’ve got a captive society.”

Doubtless Jagger’s views will have his fellow MCC members spluttering into their gin and tonics!

God only knows what Keef reckons

He's right, you know.

I came up with the same notion a while ago. If all narcotics were legalised, available over the counter from properly authorised and registered establishments, most of the crime associated with drug use would disappear, and the revenue from the sale of the drugs would help no end.

Of course, you have the problem of the drug use itself, but would that actually be worse than dealing with the fallout from a boozer of a night?

Discuss.

[LIFTED] me. You surprise me Heather.

I couldn't agree more. It should've been done ages ago. I don't think they'll do it though. They want us to be out of our minds on alcohol rather than explore our own conciousness with other stuff.

Deep down, it's just common sense.

Really? You think addicts would stop stealing to pay for them? No. You'd just have a lot more addicts.

Perhaps. There's still a lot of alcohol and tobacco smuggling going on, so I guess crime would still be associated with narcotics.

The debate needs to take place, though.

I've often wondered what the physical and mental effects would be on later generations if drugs were legalised and became as normal as a fag or pint, maybe even a cup of tea...

Very much doubt it in Portugal it is legal to possess drugs and consume them just not to sell them and usage has decreased nationally.
People don’t buy and take things because they’re legal but usually because they’re illegal.
In germany you can purchase beer at 16 just not high proof drinks until 18 which eases people into it and keeps it indoors rather than on the streets.

Whatever we do what have have been doing just is not working.

I've mentioned it before and I'll mention it again.

The reason such a thing wouldn't work is because of the British mindset/attitude/whatever you want to call it. Look at the type of people the Dutch are. Then contrast this with the British. Think how the average Brit comes across to a foreigner - drunk hooligans. They can't control their alcohol intake. Regularly it's "let's go out on the lash" or similar. Now add drugs into the mix. A gang of drunk men, high as a kite, just isn't gonna work.

ED depts are already stretched out with the aftereffects of drinking (not always drunks who attend, but sometimes the victims of drunks). Add drugs to the mix and it's a catastrophe. Particularly with so many ED depts and hospitals closing. If we ever reached a point where drinking could be "controlled", then maybe it might be worth considering legalising drugs. Until then, I'd say no.

Personally, I'm against drugs. I've stopped drinking and I don't smoke (even though I used to have the odd cigarette maybe a few times a year).

I do not drink much, smoke at all, and have never taken drugs. Though drugs may not actually increase problems in A&E. Cannabis smokers are probably more chilled and so will be less likely to be aggressive. Add in the fact that they get the munchies which means that they will be more able to absorb the alcohol which means less trouble if they are drinking. If people could smoke cannabis on a Friday night then there may be much less trouble. Why not have a trial where an entire town is allowed to smoke cannabis openly, and see the results. I would imagine that if people are stoned that they would be calmer.

Ecstasy is used by millions every week and there is very little trouble from them. So why can't something new be tried? The existing laws are ineffective.

Fact is that just because drugs are legal doesn't mean people take them.
as mentioned earlier the whole forbidden fruit aspect is far more to blame, same with alcohol at a young age.
