http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8737531.stm How did it cost so much? Tony Blair OK'd it (he enjoyed setting up inquiries remember) in return for details on the bodies of 'The Disappeared' IIRC, people the IRA had killed and secretly buried because even they knew the public outcry at the time would be deafening. But in real terms, I'd say the lawyers fees are the real kicker... It won't amount to anything, and there's not a chance of soldiers or anyone else being convicted - what are you gonna do, have the biggest court case in history too? ![]() |

I would agree, plus who does it help by dragging it out? The soldiers who were there only acted in self defence. |

It's quite possible those killed were innocent, but there's barely a bit of what's being reported that could be proved either way, short of full-on admissions. From whoever... |

Hmm, a report that cost £40,000 per page, that's really quite something. I bet none of them were worth that much. |

Bloody hell. You could give the families of every person that was killed £10m in compensation and still have a fortune left over. And, from the summary I've read, regardless of what his conclusions are there's nowhere near enough evidence to get anyone into court on murder/manslaughter charges. I appreciate the families will be given great comfort from this but the cost is out of all proportion to the value to society it will bring. |

Not exactly unexpected. There was a comment from a local who said that there had been shootings of army in the area only days before, that would have made them very nervous. |

Nevertheless, when the sate kills unarmed civilians, there must in every case be a full enquiry that spares no expense to uncover and expose the facts of the case. This inquiry was expensive because that requirement was ignored in the first enquiry which was a shameless cover up. That original failing meant this one had to be conducted with additional rigour, not to mention being decades late which can't have helped. I see little merit in a cost / benefit analysis of this report that focuses on how much money it burned through, because in so far as it provides truth, that is an invaluable benefit. On the cost side we have simply the inefficiency of getting at that truth (to be expressed in number of lies, not £s). There should be no cheap way for any state to kill unarmed protesters. |
