Lets see how quickly Cameron will claim it was his quick acting that reduced the deficit by 0.6% and debt by £10 billion? Overall the difference between the two sets of figures for 2014/15 are so small as to be irrelevant. So they cannot claim that they are the ones that rescued the economy. Though if they cut too deeply and too hard then the mess will be theirs alone. None of this will make much difference to the majority it will still be austerity.

However, one senior economist, David Blanchflower, a former member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee, shared Mr Darling's concerns about the risk of a double-dip recession.

He told the BBC's Today programme that cutting public spending could risk sending the UK economy into a "death spiral".

"I think the danger is a phrase that Ben Bernanke used, it is called the death spiral," he said.

That will be the outcome if they cut too hard. Ireland are already in that death spiral.
