Quote:
Moving the clocks forward one hour would save hundreds of thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, campaigners say.

A study for the 10:10 climate campaign suggested putting clocks forward during winter to an hour ahead of GMT could save almost 500,000 tonnes of CO2.

They say it would make evenings lighter and reduce peak electricity demands.

Makes sense to me.

Hmph. If people just got up earlier, we wouldn't need to move the clocks forward.

:)

The government would do better to introduce and enforce more flexible working hours.

Absolutely.

Would this not have an adverse effect on people's mentality?

Personally, I find it difficult to get to sleep when it's light outside, resulting in me going to sleep later and later as the summer days get longer and longer. If the light stays around for an hour more, it'll push my bedtime forward an hour too! :P
Also, what about the darker mornings? Less visibility could mean more accidents, plus people may not feel as awake because of the lack of light, meaning reduced attention.

There was a recent proposal in Queensland for a trial and referendum on using Daylight Savings in just the SE corner, effectively splitting the state. Got an email today saying it has been abandoned.

I'm happy to go with the majority vote, but my main gripe was the use of the word Savings, I would prefer Adjustment.

I wonder what Blue thinks?

They could do this plus, much more on flexible working, and turn the street lights off after midnight and turn them on at 5am.

Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Finland seem to manage.

Epic, epic Fail.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - moving the clocks won't make the blindest bit of difference. People will still use the same amount of electricity - all you're doing is moving when it occurs.

Secondly, the time is the time it is because of where the Sun is in the sky, idiots.

Thirdly, if you want to reduce the amount of energy people use, try starting a "Don't turn it up - wear a jumper" campaign.

Fourthly, if the government was to have all council offices, hospitals, schools etc. start at 8am, I contend that the rest of the country would adjust to match.

I have to agree there are many ways for this to be done without changing clocks. Already some schools start earlier.

But then everyone would work 7:30-16:00, same as me, and I'd not have such a plain-sailing journey into work most mornings! (8-p)

(Personally I agree that we need to adjust our lifestyles so we get our day over with earlier, leaving some evening free, rather than arsing about with clocks. That's just retarded.)

My preference is to simply do away with BST. I wouldn't mind staying on GMT+1 all year around, although I'd prefer it if I could start work an hour later to compensate.
