The NHS watchdog NICE is calling for trans-fats to be eliminated from food in England.

The artificial fats are often found in biscuits, cakes and fast food - but they can damage health.

NICE is also pressing for further reductions in salt and saturated fats, to help prevent deaths from cardiovascular disease.

But what will it do to our pies?

My dear departed dad said this back in the mid sixties and nobody listened. I don't agree with banning it though - all one needs to is tax it out of existence.

This report misses a trick though in that it fails to mention that sugar intake is by far a higher risk factor for heart disease than either salt or fat intake. If you really want to bite into the heart disease thing, you need to heavily tax refined sugars.

I agree though you need to eliminate the sugar subsidies for growing it.

If this takes the taste out of stuff, I don't wanna fcuking hear it...

This strikes me as just more nannying rather than dealing with the underlying psychological (and national) issue, and an easy way to raise revenue - like the congestion charge it's not being done for the benefit of all, cos people will just carry on doing what they've always done. It's not like food companies are suddenly gonna kill their own trade...

Also, I'm a fat bastard because it's MY fault, not the food companies

If they are reduced gradually you wouldn't even notice the change.

Unfortunately I'm the sort of person who can tell you what country a bottle of Coke came from just by tasting it

I've already noticed how certain foods just don't taste quite as good as they used to; anyone else?

I have noticed that I have so little salt in my diet that I actually have to add it. But that is better than exceeding it every day.

British convenience foods and confectionery are the laughing stock of Europe for a good reason - they taste like crap.

If we alter the tastes of some of our "treasured" foods, I doubt we'll lose very much. In fact, if margarines for instance disappear from foods, you personally will find most foods improving in taste.

Remember the old rule: Garbage In, Garbage Out - if your ingredients taste like sh!te, the end product probably will do as well.

Most food is manufactured to a price anyway. It might push the cost up a little, but it might stop people buying it and end up throwing it away.

According to the FSA (that is the Food Standards Agency, not the Financial Services Authority) very few foods in England contain trans-fats (as opposed to foods found in other European countries and throughout the world) and thus a ban would not achieve much.

But what will it do to our pies?

Nothing bad. The best pastry is always made from saturated fat anyway.

All trans-fats allow companies to do is to reduce the cost of manufacture whilst at the same often charging more than a properly-made item.
