Cutting welfare budgets could cost lives, say researchers.

Analysis of European data showed that a £70 reduction in welfare spending per person is associated with a 2.8% rise in alcohol-related deaths and 1.2% rise in deaths from heart disease.

Writing in the British Medical Journal, the UK research team said ordinary people may be paying the ultimate price for budget cuts.

If they are cutting 70 quid off the benefits, where are they getting the money for alcohol? Or is it the DTs doing them in, because they can't afford any more? :?

Knowing alcoholics they will be getting the money from what is provided for food. They are simply transferring their spend from food to alcohol. Alcoholics barely eat, getting most of their calories from the booze itself. After that they might give up something else like money for clothes or rent.
