So Google aren't actually any better than Apple after all, are they?

Amazon did it first, now Google doing it. Apple say they can but never have and probably never will (see quote in the article). Hmm. I'm not particularly reassured. To quote Rowan Atkinson at a protest on the racial hatred bill, which (before amendment) stood to make almost any sort of satire illegal - "I don't want them to tell me they won't do it. I want them to tell me they can't do it".

The fundamental point being : With downloaded digital content, you can buy it but you don't necessarily actually ever own it. CD & DVD ripping FTW.

I've only ever bought one DRM free track online. All my films and music are bought on CD and DVD.

I have about 22 that I have bought out of nearly 27000 tracks so a very low percentage. I prefer to rip CD's because you can at least get them insured.

Plus you have full quality audio and a reliable physical backup.

So, Google/Apple deleting malware from your 'phone, which is collecting passwords, tracking your location or whatever is a bad thing? :?

I'm not too keen on the idea, but I am glad they have the ability, especially Google, because they don't have as thorough checks as Apple. Didn't Apple remove a malware App which slipped through last year? :?

My thoughts exactly. An app that misleaded and mined data without the users permission is forcibly removed..... I would expect any marketplace to do the same

If it only affects malware and spyware and not what they might question because of morality then yes it is a good thing. Most of us are adults and can decide if we want smut on our phones. ;)

I am reminded of Amazon's deletion of 1984 from Kindles. The thing we are seeing is that our phones, computers, consoles etc. are not really ours any more. We may own the hardware, but it is increasingly obvious that the content is not our property, and beyond our control.

Yes but 1984 was not a malware or spyware issue. I have no issue with them deleting malware, but purchased content should incur automatic refunds if they have to do it. Though how often is that in reality?
